School Transport, a Lift Club or Driving Yourself: Which Suits Your Family?

Every family weighs up the same three options for the school run. Here is a fair comparison of what each one asks of you.

A parent and child at the open boot of a car

If you are deciding how your child gets to school, you are probably choosing between three options: a scholar transport operator, a lift club with other parents, or driving yourself. None is right for everyone. Here is how they compare.

Driving yourself

Good for: families who live close to school, have flexible work hours and want full control.

  • You decide the departure time and the route.
  • You get the car-ride conversation with your child.
  • But it costs time every morning and afternoon, fuel, wear on the car and often a stressful traffic window.
  • If you are ill, away or stuck at work, there is no backup unless you arrange one.

A lift club

Good for: families who live near each other and share similar working hours.

  • Costs are shared and you do the school run only some days.
  • It depends heavily on trust and good friendships. One parent's schedule change affects everyone.
  • Check each driver's licence, the car's roadworthiness and whether every child has a proper seatbelt.
  • Think ahead about what happens if a parent drops out, or if there is a disagreement.

A scholar transport operator

Good for: families who need a reliable daily routine, particularly when both parents work.

  • A professional operator provides a fixed pick-up time, fixed route and a backup plan if a vehicle or driver is unavailable.
  • You pay a regular fee, but you get your mornings and afternoons back.
  • Quality varies, so check licences, driver permits and communication before you sign. Our parent's checklist can help.

Questions to ask yourself

  • How much time does the school run cost us each week, honestly?
  • What happens on the day someone is sick, away or the car will not start?
  • Do we want to share responsibility with other parents, or hand it to a professional?
  • What can we afford each month, including petrol and parking?

There is no wrong answer

Many families mix options, such as scholar transport on weekdays and a parent collecting for sport on Fridays. What matters is that your child gets there safely and on time, and that you are comfortable with the plan.

If you would like to compare, you can request a school transport quote and weigh the monthly fee against your own costs.
