Scholar Transport in Pretoria: A Parent's Checklist
Choosing scholar transport is a safety decision. Use this practical checklist to compare operators in Pretoria before you hand over your child's school run.

Choosing scholar transport in Pretoria is not only about price or pick-up times. You are trusting someone with your child every school day, so it is worth spending an hour on checks before you commit. This checklist is written for parents and works for any operator, including us.
Start with the paperwork
Carrying learners between home and school is public transport, which means a legitimate operator should hold the right documents. You are entitled to ask to see them, and a good operator will not mind.
- An operating licence for the route or service, issued by the relevant provincial authority. Ask which licence covers your child's route.
- A professional driving permit (PrDP) for every driver who carries passengers. Ask for the permit category and check the expiry date.
- A current roadworthy certificate and licence disc for the specific vehicle that will carry your child, not just "a" vehicle.
- Insurance that covers passengers. Ask what is covered and ask for confirmation in writing.
If an operator is vague, defensive or promises to "send it later", treat that as information.
Look at the vehicle itself
Ask to see the vehicle, ideally before the first day and at the time your child would travel.
- Is there a working seatbelt for every seat, and does the operator promise never to carry more learners than there are belts?
- Is the vehicle clean, well maintained and free of obvious damage, worn tyres or broken seats?
- Is there a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher on board?
- Is there enough room for school bags, or are they piled where they could block an exit?
Ask about the driver
The driver matters as much as the vehicle.
- Will it be the same driver every day, and what happens when that driver is sick or on leave?
- Has the operator carried out background checks, and what do they cover?
- How does the driver handle a child who is not at the pick-up point, or an adult who is not at the gate?
Understand the route and the timing
Ask for the actual pick-up time and the expected drop-off time, then test them against your own morning. A route that is 20 minutes longer than it needs to be because of too many stops is a long day for a young child.
- How many learners will be on the vehicle, and where are the other stops?
- What is the plan for traffic, roadworks or a breakdown?
- Will the school gate or drop-off zone be used safely, with your child never crossing a busy road alone?
Agree how communication works
Most problems on the school run are communication problems.
- Is there a direct phone or WhatsApp number for your route, or only an office line?
- If the vehicle is running late, will you hear it from the operator before you hear it from your child?
- How do you tell them about an absence, an early collection or a change of address, and how much notice do they need?
Check the practical terms
- Is the price quoted per term, per month or per trip, and what is included?
- What are the rules for holidays, public holidays, exams and school closures?
- What notice is needed to stop the service, and is anything refundable?
- Is there a written agreement, and can you take it home and read it before signing?
Trust your own observations
Visit, ask questions, and watch how the operator answers. Someone who is organised, patient and open with documents is usually organised on the road too. Speak to other parents on the same route if you can.
